Pet Odor Removal from Carpets

ALL CLEAN!, LLC provides pet odor removal from deep within your carpet fibers.  Here’s how it works… When a dog or cat urinates on your carpet, the urine often goes down into the backing, padding, and sub-floor, where a regular carpet cleaning can not reach.  The first thing we do with any pet contamination scenario is to darken the room and use a black light to illuminate the pet stains. (Urine stains glow under UV lighting). Many customers are surprised to find that Fido was naughtier than they thought!

There are essentially four options when considering pet odor removal. Let’s look at each one to find out what’s best for your particular scenario. Here they are from least to most aggressive…

OPTION 1: REMOVE MILD PET ODORS SUCH AS WET DOG SMELL

Before we get started on actual cost related methods and procedures, I’d like to first mention that if you have a “doggy smell” or “wet dog smell”,  you do NOT need to spend extra money on deodorization for dog odor removal.

Many companies will try to upsell deodorizers.  Don’t let them fool you into spending more money than you need to.  If they have good equipment, they can easily flush out the dog odor without having to add expensive chemicals.  This is what you get with ALL CLEAN!, LLC – a deep down thorough carpet cleaning that automatically removes pet odors from carpet fibers.  Our high heat, high water volume, and high suction power is quite sufficient. No extra chemicals required!

Oh, and once we’ve cleaned your carpets and IF any urine stains still remain, we will apply a chemical (at no extra charge) to remove those pet urine stains. The pet stains will disappear within a few hours as the chemical dissipates. Result: No odor and no stains at no extra cost to you!

OPTION 2: REMOVE MEDIUM LEVEL PET ODORS - SMELL IS UNPLEASANT.

When a pet urinates in your carpet, and it’s more than just a “dribble”, the urine goes down into the backing, padding, and possibly even the sub-floor.  Not to fear!  We have Options 2 and 3 for tackling this scenario. Option 2 is far less expensive than Option 3, but it’s only effective on small areas.

Enzymes - Safe and Effective

One thing to consider first is that no matter who cleans your carpet, no matter how powerful their equipment… neither the backing, the padding, nor the sub-floor will be cleaned or deodorized with just a standard carpet cleaning. Mild odors will still emanate from underneath your carpet unless it is properly addressed.  Option 2 is the application of enzymes after we’ve extracted all the urine from within your carpet. The enzymes will effectively eat away and eliminate the low to mid-level urine odor from under your carpet.

Cost effective, but with a downside

Other than only being able to treat small areas at a time. another downside to this method is that if you have a urine stain and urine odor simultaneously, we can’t treat both at the same time. The stain removal chemical will kill the enzymes, rendering the enzymes ineffective. So what many customers will choose to do is have us clean their carpets and apply just the stain removal chemical. Then, after waiting a few hours for the stain to disappear, they’ll do a self-treatment for just the odor.  All you need to do is apply an inexpensive enzyme after the urine stain is gone and your problem is solved!  This method is a very cost-effective way for treating low to medium level cat and dog urine odors.

OPTION 3: PET ODOR REMOVAL - MEDIUM TO SEVERE URINE ODORS - SMELL IS REALLY BAD!!!

For strong and excessive pet odor removal caused by urine that is deep within your carpet’s backing, padding, and sub-floor, we first identify the contaminated areas.  We do this by darkening the room and illuminating the pet urine with ultraviolet light. (See pictures below). We then mix a powdered chemical at about 200 degrees (a gallon or two at a time) and pour it into your carpet, thoroughly saturating the contaminated areas down to the sub-floor.

Remove Pet Odors and Stains

As per the manufacturer, the chemical “combines the power of natural oxygen with the biological power of odor modification to destroy odorous materials without leaving strong artificial fragrances behind”. The product dwells for half an hour and during this time it will decontaminate the area and remove the pet odors and stains, all in one efficient process.

The Most Effective Pet Odor Removal Process

After the half hour is up, and the urine has been broken down by the chemical, we use a Water Claw (shown in the pictures below) to extract the pet urine along with the chemical, out into our cleaning van. After this pet odor removal process is complete, we then clean as normal to remove dirt and any residuals left behind. This method is probably the most effective way of removing severe pet odors from wall to wall carpet offered by any carpet cleaning company.

Note: A phone conversation rather than email is preferred when dealing with pet odor remediation.

OPTION 4: REPLACE THE CARPET!

Oh yes, there is always Option #4.  If the amount of product needed to solve an extreme pet odor problem exceeds 5 gallons per average sized room, we typically recommend replacing the carpet. Both the moisture level and the cost (in my opinion) would exceed the benefit of having the pet contamination remediated.

Which Option is Best for You?

So whether you’d like to just have your carpets cleaned as with Option 1, treat with enzymes as with Option 2, go with the aggressive deodorization as with Option 3, or replace your carpets as with Option 4, we want what’s best for you and we’ll recommend accordingly.  If you’d like, we’ll come to your home to analyze your situation at no charge. All we ask is that if you want us to remove the pet urine odor, you’d have us do it the same day while we’re there.  Either way, whether we proceed or not with the pet odor removal is entirely your decision. We’re in business to serve YOU!

Frequently Asked Questions about Our Pet Odor Removal Services

Will my carpet be 100% odor free?

I like to be conservative and say that you will realize at least a 95% improvement in the odor level. For most people that is more than enough. I will advise though that if you are selling your home, the 5% that remains can be an issue for the buyer. The homeowner tends to become accustomed to the odor, making the 95% a huge improvement. Whereas the potential buyer may be able to smell subtle odors that the homeowner can not.

Is your deodorization chemical safe for my pet?

Yes, there are no toxicity concerns with our deodorization chemicals. There is a slight odor though during the cleaning process that is non-offensive and will dissipate shortly after the cleaning process.

Do you have a do-it-yourself way of removing pet urine odors and stains?

I, get asked this question quite often. Yes, I have a very effective way of removing both the stain and the smell as long as you get to it soon enough.  Once the urine dries it is not as likely to remove the stain, but this process will still help with the smell.

First, I’d like to share with you what you should NOT do:

Don’t try to suck it up with a vacuum.  This will damage standard type vacuums and cause wet-vacs to smell.

Don’t use vinegar.  Unless you like your house smelling like vinegar.

Don’t use chemicals such as Resolve, Spot Shot, etc…  These chemicals are primarily designed for removing dirt, not pet odors.

Here’s what you should do to remove pet odors from urine, and the sooner you can do this after your pet has urinated, the better.

Step 1 – Blot as much as you can with a paper towel, towel, or any cloth will do.  Better yet, if you have a small carpet cleaning devise like a Spot Bot to extract the urine, that may work even better.

Step 2 – Saturate the area with an enzyme-based chemical such as BioKleen’s Bac-Out or Nature’s Miracle.  These products can be found on Amazon.  Nature’s Miracle can be found in most pet stores. The enzymes (actually non-pathogenic bacteria) will literally eat away at the urine like microscopic Pac Men.

Step 3 – Wet a white washcloth at least the size of the urine spot with luke-warm water. White is preferable as to prevent bleeding from the dyes of a colored towel.

Step 4 – Place the washcloth over the spot.  This will keep the bacteria alive longer so they can do a better job eating away at the offending urine.  And, the residual urine that was left in the carpet after blotting with the dry towel in step 1 will wick into the washcloth preventing a permanent stain in your carpet.

Step 5 – Leave the moistened towel in place for up to 10 hours.  After that period of time, you may remove the towel and let the carpet dry on its own.  The stain and the odor should be 100% gone once the carpet is dry IF you caught it in time!

Just remember, this pet odor removal procedure is good only if the urine stains are not too extensive.  You don’t want to wet your carpet with too much product at once as it needs to dry, preferably within a day.  If you have a significant amount of urine in your carpet I recommend giving us a call so that we can come out and do Option 3, found above on this page.
